New Companion-y Goodness

The 29th of May 2009 will be a day long remembered as the day that the BBC revealed Karen Gillan as the actress to play the 11th Doctor’s first companion.

It’s an inspired choice for various reasons, mainly due to the fact that she is Scottish, a redhead and gorgeous. To quote Exectutive Producer Steven Moffat:
“We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it.”
This virtual unknown has appeared in an episode of Doctor Who previously as a soothsayer in The Fires of Pompeii, and also an episode of Rebus for ITV, and Channel 4’s Stacked and The Kevin Bishop Show.
I find it interesting that the BBC have yet to reveal the character’s name, why is this? Are the new production team just not ready to reveal such details yet, or is there something more interesting afoot? Would her name be considered a spoiler, or give away plot details? does she play a famous person, or a returning character from the Doctor’s past? A newly regenerated Romana perhaps? very unlikely, but I can dream can’t I?
I think it more likely that Karen’s companion will be a contemporary girl, hopefully this time not from London. Three on the trot is quite enough thank you, let her keep her Scottish accent.
Personally I would favour an historical companion, not necessarily famous, but someone who would still have a greater sense of wonder about the universe, and who’s ideals and beliefs may clash with the Doctor’s more bohemian outlook on life.
I rather like the idea of her being a Pictish Princess.
whoever or whatever her character turns out to be I look forward to it immencely.

Highland League Restructure

Just a quick note to congratulate Formartine United, Turriff United, and Strathspey Thistle, who on 25th February 2009 were elected to the Scottish Highland Football League.

While I wish these teams well in the Highland League next season I can’t help but feel sorry for Banks O’ Dee Football Club who failed to get elected, especially since they had been courted for many years by the big wigs of the SHFL.
However, since the election of new teams is in the hands of the member clubs Banks O’ Dee seem to have been the victim of self interest by the Highland clubs. Because BOD are a very successful finacially secure business the member clubs voted for the teams least likely to to rock the boat, and not a team that in a few years could actually challenge for the league.
Banks O’ Dee will one day make it in to the SHFL but may have to wait until the whole of Scottish football is restructured……
Scottish football definately needs a pyramid system.

Dirt and Deity

“What an antithetical mind! — tenderness, roughness — delicacy, coarseness — sentiment, sensuality — soaring and groveling, dirt and deity — all mixed up in that one compound of inspired clay!”

These are the words that Lord Byron used to describe Robert Burns, I can think of no better words to describe Scotland’s National Poet.

So since this is Burn’s Night, I’m going to post a couple of my favourite burns songs.
Enjoy.
